Peter Pan (1953)

— Oscar Wilde.

When I was a young child, the clunky Disney VHS tapes were played on repeat in our home. Fairytales, magic potions, and evil witches were all that we were exposed to as children. But, ‘Peter Pan’ was a particular favorite of mine. I don’t recall the first time that I saw the film, but once I did, I became obsessed. Not with the title character, rather with the villain: Captain Hook. There was something about the ‘bad guy’ that appealed to me. Soon after, I started to draw pictures of the character, collect the merchandise, and play dress-up. My family and I visited Disney World multiple times over back-to-back years and seeing him in the flesh was always an exciting experience. It may sound strange, but it was a childhood fandom that I bought into. I’ve seen the movie so many times now, and it brings me back to that young boy. It’s a reminder of my childhood and the message that the main character imparts: never grow up.

I am currently a student at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin. This blog will be used for a course that I am taking titled, Communication Technology and Social Change. For this assignment, I have chosen to select 25 American films that I find most compelling or personally meaningful.
